If you’ve admired mid-century modern architecture, chances are you’ve encountered a Pietro Belluschi design, even if you didn’t realize it. As a leading figure in modernist architecture, Belluschi left an indelible mark on Oregon’s landscape, designing numerous residences, churches, and public buildings. His signature style—Northwest Modernism—emphasizes harmony between structures and their surroundings, often incorporating natural materials like Douglas Fir and cork.
One such masterpiece, a Belluschi-designed home in Oak Grove, an unincorporated neighborhood of Milwaukie, Oregon, offers a rare glimpse into his architectural genius. Known as the Ressler House, this mid-century modern treasure was constructed in 1949 at the height of Belluschi’s career and embodies his commitment to blending elegance with functionality.
Homes designed by Pietro Belluschi rarely come onto the market. As of 2022, the Ressler House had been sold only once, in 1993. When it was listed again on March 15, 2022, for $1,870,000, it sold in less than a month, a testament to its architectural and historical value.
In a longstanding tradition among Belluschi homeowners, the previous owners, Neil Matteucci and Norm Kalbfleisch, hosted a reception for architecture enthusiasts just days before listing the property. This event welcomed former and current Belluschi homeowners, highlighting a shared commitment to preserving Northwest Modernist architecture.
Situated on nearly two acres next to a serene creek, the Ressler House exemplifies Belluschi’s Northwest Regional style. Its design seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, thanks to glass walls that blur boundaries, deep eaves, and an abundance of natural materials.
One of the home’s most striking features is the extensive use of vertical-grain Douglas Fir, which lines the walls and ceilings of the foyer, corridors, and sunken living room. Complemented by the original cork flooring, the wood tones are balanced by black accents, including doors and stained concrete, as well as wide windows framing views of moss-covered trees.
The living and dining areas, anchored by a staggered Roman brick fireplace, lead to a kitchen that marks the beginning of a modern wing added by the second owners. This wing includes a master suite with a private courtyard shaded by black bamboo, a seamless blend of original charm and contemporary functionality.
Belluschi believed in creating warmth through “space, light, texture, and color.” The Ressler House stands as a nearly untouched architectural gem, thanks to decades of thoughtful preservation. Matteucci and Kalbfleisch worked with Portland architects to restore and expand the home without compromising its historic integrity, ensuring its legacy for future generations.
